We offer Learn-to-Row Camps each summer to introduce rowing to students ages 11 - 17.
The program is offered to students entering grades 6-12 to introduce them to the sport of rowing. New rowers learn the basics of the rowing stroke, proper care and use of the equipment, and preparation for competition.
We introduce students to “sweep” rowing (a technique where each athlete uses one oar). They learn to row in fours (rowing shells with seats for four rowers plus a coxswain) and eights (rowing shells with seats for eight rowers plus a coxswain). During the season they have some exposure to “sculling” (a technique where each athlete uses two smaller oars, one in each hand).
Rowers will learn the proper technique on indoor rowing machines (ergs), and be educated on all safety aspects of rowingwhile having fun and enjoying the Hudson River. Participants will experience the benefits of rowing as an athletic pursuit and will have an opportunity to try out for ARC’s junior competitive rowing programs.
