New Oars Clinch State Championship Win

Albany Rowing Center was a 2009 recipient of a Responsible Sports Community Grant from Liberty Mutual. Liberty Mutual's Responsible Sports program supports volunteer youth sports coaches and parents who help our children succeed both on and off the field. The $2,500 grant was used for the purchase of 8 new sweep oars for the Junior Girls team in the spring of 2010.

Perhaps not coincidentally, the Girls Senior 8+ won the New York State Championship a short time later, using these oars. At just past 9:00 am Sunday May 11, 2010, in a little less than 5 minutes and 36 seconds, the ARC Girls Senior 8+ ended a 9-year winning streak by the Saratoga Rowing Association as champions at the New York State Scholastic Rowing Association's State Championship Regatta at Fish Creek in Saratoga. Coxed by Abbey Bierman, and stroked by Emilie Johnston in challenging and windy conditions, the composite club boat of primarily 10th and 11th graders from Bethlehem High School showed convincingly that their training, drive and competitive spirit were unmatched by the perennial favorite. It was a proud day for the team, their parents, Coach Mike MacMinn, and all of ARC.
